Frank and Leigh Strawford moved to the beautiful and tranquil surroundings of Wernddu farm, Pen-y-Clawdd in the heart of Monmouthshire, with their children Lauren and Taylor in 1999. Encountering an inspired revelation from God to plant a vineyard the idea was set and in 2002 the action started.
We planted in March 2002, 200 white Reichensteiner vines seeing favourable results, further plantings over the next 4 years amounted to 2000 vine varieties to produce white rose and red wine.

Since we moved here, with nature all around us, led to a different way of thinking and we became passionate about growing organically and producing naturally as possible, we registering with the Soil Association in September 2004 and have become fully certified organic growers and producers.

As one thing leads to another in 2005 we realised that we had these beautiful old variety Perry pears (120 year old) we could produce an unusual Perry from them.
We progressed from making Perry to making a traditional welsh cider made out of old variety apples from Monmouthshire orchards.
What a God send as 2007 and 2008 have been very bad years for growing grapes due to our prolonged rain during the summer months.

Selling at farmers markets, food festivals and local shows are our main outlets.
We also have a Tasting Room next to the Winery where visitors can sample our wines, Perry, cider and buy local produce and crafts.

We are always happy to provide guided tours of the vineyard and talks on production.

You’ll recognise Wernddu wines by our distinctive labels - a portrait of the Strawford’s teenaged daughter Lauren, sketched by a street artist in Paris.

A further venture at Wernddu in 2006 was started, breeding Alpacas; They originate from Peru and are a very exotic animal, very friendly and are mainly breed for their amazing fleece.

We started with three breeding females and now have eleven. You will see some of them on the labels of our cider and perry. They are a huge attraction at the vineyard and are trained to go for a walk and will feed from your hands.

We are pleased to have available beautiful hand made garments socks, hats, gloves and scarves made from their wool.
